Gravel Calculator
Enter the area and depth to see how many cubic yards and tons of gravel to order. Quarries and landscape yards usually sell by the ton, so the tonnage is the number to give them.
Typical depths: 2 to 3 inches for a path or decorative cover, 4 inches for a patio or shed base, and 6 to 8 inches in layers for a driveway (larger stone at the bottom, finer on top).
How it’s calculated
- Cubic yards = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27.
- Tons = cubic yards × 1.4. Gravel weighs about 2,800 lb per cubic yard; crushed stone with fines and wet gravel can weigh up to 1.5 or 1.7 tons per yard.
